The Experience

I'm slowly transforming an acre of former farm land into an edible forest. The fields are around my comfortable and clean house. There is always something to do: plant, deweed, trim, harvest, come up with ideas, clean out the creeks, enjoy the view, help with household chores, relax. I am looking for proactive and independent people who like a hands-on experience in a beautiful setting and wish to spend time outdoors and mostly offline.

This was such an amazing experience ! I learnt so much about the local plants, fruits, vegetables, sustainable living, farming, the Puerto Rican culture … I loved it! The work was really physical and intense at times, but also so rewarding to push your limits and see the work you achieved. The heat can make it difficult too, so don't expect to come here as a holiday. It's a nice place to seek peace and tranquility. Lisa's food was absolutely amazing, super healthy and delicious, really grateful for it! I got along super well with the team and had the best time 🫶🌴🍌

It was great to have you here and see you going from "I can't do this" to "I'll get this done". Rewarding, indeed!

I learned a lot here while on my first Worldpackers experience! Lisa was very knowledgeable and accommodating and we learned much about tropical farming, especially the care of banana and plantain trees. The work can be difficult in the heat, but as long as you plan to work in the cooler hours of the day, you'll be fine. I particularly enjoyed just spending time connecting with the nature around me.

My experience in Yabucoa was a great first! With the small group of volunteers, it was a great way for me to learn one on one. The farm was beautiful and the accommodations were clean and comfortable. Lisa cooked for us 3 times a day and it was always something new! Often using meal time to teach words in Spanish and shareaww culture. Overall a great experience for first-time volunteers. Bring a lot of breezy loose clothing it's really hot and humid!

During my stay, I felt very uncomfortable with how a male volunteer in the project interacted with me, which I brought up to the host. She was ok with me switching shifts to avoid contact with the volunteer, and triyng to do that I also stop having meals with the group. After 2 weeks, I was asked to leave earlier than expected due to my lack of interaction with the group. I expected more support from the host, and I hope this situation helps the host handle such delicate situations with more empathy and take action to avoid other volunteers feeling uncomfortable to the point of isolation.

Lisa replied

Dear Krista, how unfortunate, that you are making up this story. You never told me that you felt uncomfortable with the male volunteer. You simply said you'd prefer to work different hours and opted to work from 11:30/12 to 4:30/5 even though I adverted you that we should avoid the sun between 11 and 3, and that it’s not ideal if you work when there’s no one around to instruct or help you. You rarely worked the required five hours a day or 25 hours a week. You also never said that you did not want to have meals with us because of the male volunteer. You simply said you’re not hungry. Neither I nor the two female volunteer (nor the male volunteer) were aware of you having an issue with him. Your lack of honesty and consideration are part of why I wanted you to leave ahead of time.

This was my first WP experience. The accommodations were clean and safe. There was a lot of physical labor which I expected. It was more difficult in the heat than I expected. Lisa is very intelligent. She has a wealth of knowledge on many subjects and is ready to share. Lisa is very kind and very helpful and thoughtful. The farm is beautiful. I also enjoyed meeting the neighbor Fono. All in all it was a good experience.
